What is GMDSS and is it mandatory?+

GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) is an internationally agreed-upon set of safety procedures and communication equipment for maritime distress and safety. It is mandatory for all SOLAS vessels (generally ships over 300 GRT on international voyages). Regular GMDSS radio surveys are required to maintain compliance.

How often should VDR/S-VDR be tested?+

VDR and S-VDR systems require Annual Performance Testing (APT) as per IMO Resolution MSC.333(90). The APT must be carried out by a certified service provider within 12 months of the previous test. Failure to maintain valid APT certificates can result in detention during Port State Control inspections.
