Voyage Data Recorders (VDR) and Simplified VDR (SVDR) systems are the maritime equivalent of an aircraft black box. EKS Marine Electronics provides sales, installation, annual performance testing, and 24/7 technical support for all major VDR/SVDR manufacturers.
A Voyage Data Recorder captures and stores navigational data, bridge audio communications, radar imagery, and other critical information that can be invaluable in accident investigation and improving safety at sea. Under SOLAS regulations, VDRs are mandatory for most passenger ships and cargo vessels over 3,000 GRT built after July 2002.
Simplified VDRs (SVDR) are required for existing cargo vessels of 3,000 GRT and upwards. While recording fewer parameters than a full VDR, SVDRs still capture the most critical navigation and communication data.
EKS Marine Electronics is authorized to perform annual performance tests for VDR systems as required by SOLAS and flag state regulations. Our certified engineers conduct capsule retrieval tests, data replay verification, and issue the required VDR service certificates.
Data stored by a VDR includes: ship position, speed and heading, bridge audio recordings, radar images, ECDIS data, AIS transponder data, water depth, wind speed and direction, alarm status, and hull opening status.
